The Tushingham Hall Collection

Trevanion Auctioneers are honoured to have been instructed to hold an auction of the selected contents of Tushingham Hall, near Whitchurch, Cheshire on the gracious instruction of Mr and Mrs Peter Moore Dutton.

Tushingham Hall, near Whitchurch

The sale of the selected contents of Tushingham Hall is a unique opportunity to purchase a piece of history from one of the country’s most notable listed country houses, whose Tudor revival façade hides behind it a home steeped in history. The hall itself has been in the same family ownership for more than two centuries, passing from the ownership of the Kenyon family to the Vawdrey family via the female line and on to the Moore Duttons.

In 1814 Daniel Vawdrey decided to re-model the original moated house and create the handsome hall we see today. Vawdrey commissioned the assistance of Benjamin Wyatt, agent to the Penrhyn Estate and younger brother of Sir James Wyatt whose work can be seen at Belvoir Castle and Goodwood House.

The Vawdrey and Moore Dutton families amassed a fine collection for their home and had a keen passion for art and antiques which has continued up to the present day.  The auction will include everything you might expect from the eclectic contents of a much-loved and lived-in traditional country house, such as fine 17th century and later furniture and furnishings as well as an array of garden statuary and ornaments.  Of note is an incredible untouched ‘museum room’ full of fascinating finds and tribal artefacts from generations of grand tours, intrepid travels and amateur mineralogists. Family portraits and Old Master paintings from across Europe dating to the 16th century onwards, also feature strongly in the sale as do Asian ceramics, works of art, militaria and a beautiful selection of rare books.  There will be something for everyone’s budget and taste included in the auction – even a sledge and a boat!

Of the auction, Managing Partner, Christina Trevanion says ‘We are delighted to present the fine and eclectic contents of Tushingham Hall in a single owner auction taking place live and online on the 28th June 2023.  While some are open to the public, many of the country’s most beautiful country homes are private residences, meaning their impressive contents – often sourced from across the globe and collected over centuries – remain out of the public eye. The Tushingham Hall auction provides a rare opportunity for buyers to acquire a piece of history and a slice of ‘country life’ from this beautiful family home’.
